CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
MELISSA
I stand as immobile as a marble statue while Tim walks away, leaving me with Jamie. Iâm torn between running after him and walking out of the country club and calling an Uber to take me home. Iâve never had a guy try to pawn me off on someone else while on a date with me. Certainly not a guy I like.
I get that Tim thinks heâs doing the right thing. I mean, his wife left him for somebody else, and so did several girlfriends. But that must be more indicative of life in LaLa Land than Wisconsin. Iâm not saying all relationships work out here, but thereâs less of a sense of entitlement.
âWould you like to sit down?â Jamie motions to a lounger next to him.
âNo need.â I point to a nearby table. âIâll just wait there.â Good night, Jamie. Maybe put a shirt on or something? I avert my eyes from his ridiculously distracting body
âSammy will be back from the snack bar in a minute, and sheâd love to see you.â
Tentatively moving toward the vacant chair next to him, I say, âListen, Jamie, youâve made it clear you donât want anything to do with me, so letâs not pretend.â
âAll Iâm doing is asking you to sit down, not to run away with me.â
âFine, Iâll sit down.â But I wonât say anything, and you canât make me. Iâm tempted to stick my tongue out at him.
Once Iâm situated, he says, âItâs a beautiful day, isnât it?â
I grunt in response.
âAre you a member of the club?â
âNo.â
After several moments of awkward silence, he says, âElk Lake is a great town.â
âMmm.â Iâm not about to make anything about this easy for him.
âMelissa â¦â
While continuing to look forward, I lazily look at him out of the corner of my eye. âWhat?â
âYou can sit somewhere else if you want to.â
I make a move to stand up when Sammy comes running over. âMelissa! Your date is here at the country club?â She hops from foot to foot on the hot pavement.
Before I can answer her, Jamie asks, âWhere are your shoes?â She motions to her chair before perching on the edge of mine to let the bottoms of her feet cool off.
Turning her full attention to me, she asks, âWhereâs Tim?â
âHe had a call to make. He should be back soon,â I tell her.
âDad and I joined the club today. Maybe you and I can come here to swim together some time.â
My heart hurts for Sammy. While I would love to go swimming with her, Iâm guessing sheâd much rather be with friends her own age. âHave you met any other kids yet?â
She shakes her head before leaning in and pointing. âI think there are some girls my age over there, but I donât have the guts to go over and talk to them.â
I scan the area to see who sheâs talking about. âMaybe we should come here together, and we can bring Paige. Sheâd know whoâs your age and sheâd even be able to introduce you.
